I first saw him on the first week of my University admission. They called him Chege. He wasn’t really a student but he was usually at his station as early as 5:30am. He was of medium height with well kempt hair and chocolate skin tone. I could tell he was in his early twenties. His hard work and the warm smile he gave the passers-by was highly noticeable. At first I didn’t give him much attention. I just thought he was one of the random traders doing their normal things, but this particular one was just more than that.
His stand was always full. He neatly arranged his fresh fruits on one side and different types of candies on the other side. He normally wears a yellow overcoat that he used the pocket to keep the scratch cards and his daily sales. His workplace was always flocked. I was greatly moved by how dedicated he was towards his livelihood. But above all his bubbly attitude and the warm smile was just everything.
After the first week, I started stopping by once a while. I randomly bought stuffs from him. He was such a warm human being. Honestly, in today’s ‘cold world,’ finding such people is quite a big deal. The way he treated his customers plus his warm, welcoming smile was enough to brighten up your day.
At times, I could just sit there for minutes listening to his never-ending stories. His dreams of going back to school to pursue business management. How he would want to establish a huge supermarket in future. About his big happy family. How he wants to continue with the legacy of his grandfather, by having more than 10 kids and we could just burst out with laughter and teary eyes. Priceless!
I enjoyed the positive and good vibes around him. He took life as it came and always told me to just move with the flow of things that I couldn’t change. His genuine heart, warm smile and his hard work will definitely open great doors that nothing else can. And all in good timing, all his dreams shall come to pass.
So, just recently, I posted a picture on my Instagram page and captioned it, ‘In 2018, I’ll eat more fruits and mind my business.’ And guess who commented on my picture; Chege the smiling machine. ‘Mind mine too, by just smiling, saying hi and buying a chewing gum once a while, whenever you pass by. ’he said.
Honestly, nothing felt better than his statement. It’s now evident after years of knowing him, he has infected me with his genuine smile that comes from the heart.
May we always strive to change people’s lives with that genuine smile from the heart!
GOOD VIBES ONLY!
